I’m tired of Tumblr’s apparent need to romanticize Sasha Grey.

Yes, she’s intelligent, well-spoken, sexy, and fairly talented from what I gathered when I watched The Girlfriend Experience.  I like her and I’m interested to see how her career progresses. And I also think it’s bullshit when people get their panties in a wad about how she was some sort of tragic woman who had her whole future ahead of her but was a victim to to the industry, etc, etc, and ask questions like “what went wrong?”.  There’s absolutely nothing wrong with doing porn if you want to and it doesn’t make you stupid, or unhealthy, or less valuable.  However, I think when she gets on talk shows and acts like she’s some sort of martyr who went into the porn business to “challenge stereotypes” is profoundly annoying.  The truth is, she did exactly the kind of films every other porn star does, in the same way every other porn star did them.  And that’s fine.  But that’s not particularly brave or romantic and it’s certainly not challenging anything.  It’s important and possible for we, including her, to challenge sex-worker stigma without putting anyone or anything on a pedestal. It’s just a job. I think it indicates a fear in the minds of people who glorify Sasha Grey- the same fear that is in the minds of the people who villify her.  Someone can be a porn actress, and just be a porn actress.  They don’t have to be Stephen Hawking for you to feel comfortable about their choices, and for you to defend them.
